Today almost every Mac that’s sold by Apple comes with a solid state hard drive. These drives offer blazingly fast read and write speeds and that’s why they’re oftentimes pricier than a traditional spinning disk drive. They’re also often smaller than traditional spinning disks.
As you use your Mac, downloaded files, app’s caches, logs and more will fill up your Mac storage, and that’s why you need to clean up your drive regularly. Here are four apps I find useful to reclaim storage space on Mac.
CleanMyMac
CleanMyMac by MacPaw is a real life saver. I own a 64GB Macbook Air, and this app has helped reclaim storage space by searching app caches, unused languages, logs, and more. Once it finds these items, it gets rid of them immediately. I use CleanMyMac once a week, and it has regularly reclaimed 500MB to nearly 1GB of storage space each time! Besides cleaning junk files, CleanMyMac can also help you maintain your Mac with features such as Verify and Repair Disk Permissions, Flush DNS and much more.

Gemini
From the same developer as CleanMyMac, Gemini searches for duplicate files on your Mac intelligently, and then gets rid of them. Duplicate photos and iTunes media are space wasters, and that’s when Gemini comes to the rescue. Upon scanning, you’ll be presented with a list of how many duplicate files you have, and how many copies of each of them. The best part? Nothing gets fully deleted until you tell the app to do a purge, so you can have peace of mind that you’re not losing anything important. Gemini is a classic Mac app that’s been around for some time, and is a no brainer for just about any system.

DaisyDisk
DaisyDisk is another Mac classic that’s been around for some time. The app has a beautiful interface, and what it does is help you find large files that are stored on your Mac. DaisyDisk displays your folders in a beautiful visualization so you can see what’s hogging up hard drive space. After seeing what’s taking up space on your drive, you can select either files or folders and delete them to reclaim space.

Hazel
Hazel is an incredible file and folder management tool. You can get really deep with this app, or you can use basic functions to help automate cleaning up your system. You set up rules in Hazel and if there are files or folders that match the rules criteria, Hazel will perform an action on it. You can set rules to delete downloaded files automatically after few days, empty the trash, delete files that are named a certain way, and so much more. After having Hazel run for a few days, you’ll never want to go without it again!
