Following up on Ally and Brian’s picks for best iPhone and iPad games of all time, it’s now my turn to share what I have enjoyed playing the most over the past several years. While many games have come and gone, here are the ones that have always held a special place on my Home screen:
Exploding Kittens
I didn’t get into the original card game but the iOS variant has me hooked and it’s just got even better with online multiplayer against friends or random opponents. It’s a turn based card game with amazing artwork, humour filled cards and has a nice simple strategic element that means that anyone can pick it up – it does take a few games to get the gist of it but once this is done you will be coming back for more.

Super Stickman Golf
It’s been around for a number of years but has stayed on my home screen for those 5 or 10 minute slots you have between appointments, it’s simple mechanics means it’s easy to pick up quickly and is one of those games you just can’t put down until you have completed the current hole you are on. It’s now in its second incarnation and it’s gotten even better with more courses, iCloud save and multiplayer options to name but a few.
You don’t have to be into golf to give it a go.

Sonic the Hedgehog
I played this in the 90’s a lot!, what more can I say about such a classic hit of the Megadrive era of gaming. It uses on-screen controls that work really well and especially on the iPad it looks (and sounds) just like the original.
All we need now is Mario on iOS and the kid in me is going to be jumping for joy.

Angry Birds: Transformers
Angry birds seems to be out of fashion these days but when they hooked up with one of favourite franchises (yes, I’m a kid of the 80’s) I couldn’t resist trying it. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they had based it on the 80’s movie adaptation, complete with 80’s hair metal music. The gameplay is a lot simpler than with other Angry Birds games, you are automatically running left to right then you just have to tap the targets and chose when you transform to avoid fast moving obstacles.
It’s not for everyone but if you are even a bit into the 80’s Transformers movie then you have to give it a try.

Crossy Road
This is one of those games I haven’t been able to put down and had me spending more time that I would like to admit trying to beat my high score. A remake of the classic Frogger game style with the addition of new characters makes it one for those completionists out there.
I was a bit concerned that I would be bombarded with ads and prompts to spend money but it’s way less than a lot of other free games and perfectly playable without spending any money.

Fallout Shelter
I have to admit that I haven’t gotten into Fallout on console but this mini iOS game has been keeping my attention for a while now. I love the art style and the writing is well done. Your goal as a vault overseer is to build up your community, sending them on quests to the wastelands, build resource and generally keep them all happy.
