It’s been there since the original iPhone – a physical Home Button. This button has served many useful purposes – one of which was assisting in resetting your iPhone.
Occasionally you’ll need to reset your phone due to an app that’s acting strange, or if iOS is acting glitchy. In these situations, a quick reset will typically help solve the aforementioned problems. However, with the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, there is no moving physical home button. What is one to do?
Thankfully the solution is easy. The “old” way of resetting your phone (if you happen to have an iPhone 6s/6s Plus or older models) was to hold down the power and home button for approximately 10 seconds. The screen will go black, and moments later an Apple logo will appear and your phone will turn back on.
They “new” way of doing this produces the same outcome, but executed in a slightly different fashion.
How to perform a soft reset on iPhone 7 / 7+
- Hold down the power button and the volume down button simultaneously (see screenshot 1 and 2)
- Hold them together for approximately 10 seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
- Log in as usual to your iPhone
One potentially annoying byproduct of this new flow; you turn your volume all the way down as part of the process. However, in my testing upon the iPhone reboot, the volume is automagically readjusted to about one-third volume.
