There are instances where I want to use an Instagram filter on a photo but I find it to be too strong, or too intense, but somewhere in the middle would be a nice compromise. This is why Instagram gives you the option to adjust the strength and intensity to your liking. Here’s how:
Instagram tips: How to change the intensity or strength of filters
- Find the photo you’d like to use and open it in Instagram.
- Tap on the filter you’d like to use.
- Once the filter applies to your photo, tap on the same filter a second time.
- You should now see a slider to adjust the strength and/or intensity. Use your finger to drag it.
- Once you’re happy with how the filter looks, continue editing and posting as you normally would.
This may be a small tip but it’s one I don’t think a lot of folks are aware of. This also works in other sections of the Instagram app as well. For instance, if you want to add colored highlights or shadows, tapping on the color a second time will bring up a slider to change the intensity. I almost always find Instagram’s default too bold, especially when it comes to the Colors editing option. Toning it down almost always looks better.

Another trick is with the intensity sliders on Instagram. For example if you moved intensity back & forth, you’ll be able to simply tap on one end of the slider to move back & forth (ex: tapping on right of slider will increase, left to decrease).
