Some people say that the best Reddit apps can’t be found on iOS. We say that they’re not looking hard enough.
While Android users do enjoy some of the most popular Reddit apps, a new generation of iOS alternatives has changed the narrative. Reddit may be one of the most popular sites in the world, but its unique format sometimes makes it difficult to browse via a mobile device. These apps improve that core experience and innovate in ways you would have never thought possible.
Before you start thinking there isn’t a better option, take a look at the best Reddit apps for iPhone and iPad.
Reddit (Official)
We can’t really talk about the best Reddit apps without talking about the official Reddit app.
To be blunt, the Reddit app is fine for most people. It runs well, it lets you access the site with ease, and Reddit has made a lot of improvements to it over the years. The horror stories you may have heard about this app don’t really apply to recent updates. For casual users, it will offer most things that you’ll ever need.
However, there are reasons why there are so many third-party alternatives. If you’re an advanced Reddit user (or a more demanding user) you’ll want to look elsewhere.
Apollo For Reddit
We’ve heard a lot of people argue over the years that Apollo is quite simply king of the Reddit apps. We don’t know if there are too many reasons to disagree with them.
Why is Apollo so special? It basically reimagines Reddit from the ground up to accommodate the mobile experience. The best example of such alterations is the app’s incredible mobile writer that makes comments easier to type. It also offers several “views” which make browsing significantly easier on a smaller screen.
Even if you’re not looking for something complicated, we don’t know how to argue against Apollo as your best app option.
Narwhal
Along with Apollo, Narwhal is one of the most common names you hear when people talk about Reddit apps for iOS. A few minutes with the app reveal why that is the case.
Narwhal is a tremendous minimalist option. It strips down the basic Reddit experience to allow for far greater speeds and overall browsing ease. It’s kind of like the Opera of Reddit apps. It’s tremendous for those who want to minimize data usage.
Narwhal isn’t the most stylish app, but it’s incredible at what it aspires to do.
Beam
The makers of Beam describe it as an app that’s “built to browse.” That may sound like a simple idea, but that philosophy does separate Beam from even the best Reddit apps.
Beam tries to effectively re-organize Reddit content. Through features like photo grouping and an advanced night mode, it offers easier and expedited browsing options. If your objective is to consume as much of Reddit as possible via a mobile device, Beam certainly helps you do so.
Beam offers a smart, efficient, and good looking alternative to the standard Reddit browsing experience.
Antenna
You can’t boil the best Reddit apps down to any single feature. However, Antenna certainly separates itself via its brilliant “swipe from anywhere” feature.
Basically, Antenna makes it easy to navigate Reddit almost entirely through swipes. Thanks to some innovative menu options, you can easily jump from section to section via swipes. You almost never need to rely on traditional menus or other interface options to find your way around.
On top of that, this app offers a great night mode, advanced hiding options, password protection, and more. It’s a complete alternative that so happens to benefit from a unique browsing option.
BaconReader
On the surface, there isn’t much flash about BaconReader. It seems to offer so many of the other abilities that you get through most other Reddit apps.
However, as you dive deeper into BaconReader, you realize that it distinguishes itself via some smart little touches. For instance, there’s its handy Dual-Pane view for larger screens. There’s also the brilliant “voting” gesture option. We even love its incredible left-handed mode design.
That’s one of the best reasons to give BaconReader a shot. It really is a joy to explore its various features to discover what you’ve been missing.
Silver
Silver is another one of those Reddit apps that doesn’t immediately distinguish itself. Actually, it looks pretty unimpressive upon first glance.
Here’s the thing, though. There are some Reddit browsers who really just want an “endless scroll” experience. That’s basically what Silver offers. It simplifies the Reddit browsing experience so that it’s fast, effective, and bountiful. It does offer some nice features, but it’s really that endless browsing design which makes it so special.
Silver is the app for Reddit users who just want to scroll, browse, and not worry about it. That’s actually kind of appealing once you get used to it.
Slide for Reddit
The biggest problem with the official Reddit app is that it doesn’t offer much control over the core Reddit experience. You pretty much just get what you get.
Slide is one of those Reddit apps that aspires to change all of that. Slide is all about offering the control that other apps deny you. From custom filters and themes to offline content options, Slide is all about making Reddit what you want it to be. We’re actually pretty amazed that an iOS app offers this much control over a core experience.
Slide is just a special, special app for anyone who wants more from Reddit than what is simply given to them. Be sure to take it for a test drive.
