The Amazon Echo has worked its way into my life in a number of different ways. I love calling out songs, adding items to my to do list, or getting information all by speaking into the air.
As an Amazon Prime member, you have access to Amazon’s catalog of music. Unfortunately the size of their catalog pales in comparison to anything like Apple Music or Spotify. Luckily, Spotify does have an integration with the Echo, but getting songs playing on the device took an extra step.
You used to have to say something like, “Play the album Reptile by Eric Clapton on Spotify“. Thankfully, Amazon just gave us a way to never have to say “on Spotify” again, by letting us choose Spotify as the default music library. This way you can say, “play OK Computer by Radiohead” and it’ll start pulling that music from Spotify right away. It’ll even give you an auditory confirmation by saying, “OK Computer by Radiohead, from Spotify” so you know where it’s pulling the music from.
How to set Spotify as your default music library on the Amazon Echo
- Open the Amazon Alexa app and press on the menu button in the upper left corner.
- This will reveal a host of options. Tap on Settings towards the bottom of the screen.
- Once in the Settings screen, tap on Music & Media, which will be under the Account heading.
- Available music services will show up. Click on the blue Customize my music service preferences button.
- From the drop down menu, choose Spotify as your default music library
Note, you can also change your default station service in this screen
