Geocaching is an amazing, worldwide game that encourages people to get outdoors and search for hidden treasure in all kinds of places. You can find geocaches under benches, in parks, underwater, in phone booths, and many other locations. There are nearly 3 million geocaches to be found! Equip yourself with a GPS or your smartphone, and you’re ready to go! Geocaching takes you on adventures to places you may have never been, and makes the process of exploring the world around you a lot of fun. Here are four geocaching apps that can help you along the way…
Geocaching by GroundSpeak Inc. It all starts with GroundSpeak’s Geocaching app. The official app lets you search for caches, view hints, tips and coordinates, log your finds, and make comments. It also has a built in GPS navigator and allows you to save Pocket Queries. Pocket Queries (a Premium Geocaching feature) allow you to save cache information on your phone without having to worry about network connection. The app also got a great update recently to include Trackables. Trackables are items that can travel the world and be tracked on the Geocaching website or now within the Geocaching app itself. If you only get one app for Geocaching, you can’t go wrong with the official one.
Spyglass by Pavel Ahafonau Spyglass is a fully featured GPS that takes advantage of all the iPhone’s hardware to make it a truly amazing digital compass. You can customize the interface in all sorts of different ways and use its augmented reality background to see where you’re going. You can even add a map behind the compass and enter your geocache’s coordinates for day or nighttime travel. If you’re looking for an amazing compass that won’t break the bank, and that’ll keep you from getting lost, this is it!

Apple Maps by Apple Whether you’re just scoping out the scene, or are on the hunt to your next cache, Apple Maps is an invaluable tool. One of my favorite features is the ability to send directions from your Mac to your iPhone. You can find the coordinates in the Geocaching app or on Geocaching.com, enter them into Apple Maps for Mac to see where you’re headed, and then finally send those directions to your iPhone before you head out. Use Apple Maps for iPhone with the compass feature turned on and you’re on your way to finding your first Geocache!

Field Trip by Niantic, Inc. While you’re out geocaching, make sure to open up the Field Trip app by Niantic, Inc. Field Trip shows you unique, historical and interesting places all around you. You can even have the app notify you occasionally when you’re close to something of note. While not part of the official geocaching experience, Field Trip can give you tons of great insights into the locations you’re visiting.
