Steve Jobs once said, "We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas". You may have also heard of the term Sherlocked. Back in the Mac OS 8 days, Apple announced Sherlock (what we now know as Spotlight) to the operating system. This overshadowed a similar app called Watson at the time, and thus the term sherlocked was updated. Apple has always taken the best from a wide variety of ideas and integrated these features into their operating systems.
What's this have to do with sending GIFs in iOS 10? In the latest update to iOS, Apple has built in the ability to search for and send GIFs without having to leave the Messages app, or have a 3rd party keyboard installed.
If you're a fan of Giphy, or 3rd party keyboards that include a GIF searching function, such as GBoard, you may have already seen this type of feature in action. Now you can use Apple's built in Messages app to search for and send GIFs. Here's how:
How to search for and send GIFs in Messages for iOS 10
- Open Messages and tap on the gray right arrow button to the left of where you'd normally type a message.
- Next, tap on the App Store button.
- This will bring up a number of sticker packs and Messages apps you've installed (I may have installed quite a few). Tap on the button that looks like 4 dots in the lower left of your screen.
- Tap on the magnifying glass button that says #images.
- Search for an image or GIF by typing into the Find images and videos search bar that appears.
- Tap on the GIF you'd like to send and press the white arrow pointing up to send your GIF.
