Wouldn’t it be great to make phone calls from anywhere? Regretfully, not all mobile phone signals can be available everywhere — especially in office buildings, hospitals, basements, and other hard to reach locations. Thankfully, with most modern smartphones you can turn on a feature called “Wi-Fi Calling”. This feature allows for a couple bits of awesome.
First, it allows you to make calls on your phone when you have poor signal strength, and it relies on a known Wi-Fi network (meaning you’ve connected to this network before). If you’re in area with poor signal but you’re on a Wi-Fi network, you can make and receive calls as you normally would. There is nothing else you need to do. The phone will automagically switch to Wi-Fi calling if it is available.
Second, you can make phone calls over Wi-Fi on known networks with your phone off; yes you read that correctly — you can even make calls on your Apple Watch with your phone off! Amazing! You can also make calls on your iPad and Mac, but sadly those devices don’t have a dialer app, however you can use contacts to make an outgoing call.
How to activate Wi-Fi calling in iOS
- Tap the Settings icon on your home screen
- Swipe down till you get to Phone.
- Tap Phone
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone ON
After turning Wi-Fi calling on, there are a couple more steps you’ll have to follow. You’ll need to update your emergency address location. This is required to help emergency response services respond to calls.
If you want to use Wi-Fi calling on other devices, you will be prompted if you want to do so and enter a pin on those devices, similar to when you forward text messages to iPad from your iPhone.
Have you turned on Wi-Fi calling on your iPhone yet?

It is possible your carrier does not support Wi-Fi calling on iOS10. I have had some twitter discussions about this. Have you reached out to O2?
I do not see wi-fi calling on my iPhone 5s and my carrier is Verizon. Do they not offer it?
